Establishing the UK Stem Cell Bank

Following reports into stem cell research by the Chief Medical Officer and the House of Lords Select Committee in 2002, the Bank was established with a grant from the MRC and BBSRC in January 2003. Termed Phase I funding this ran from 2003 until 2006.  Details of Phase I can be found in the 2003 – 2005 Progress Report.  The Bank was awarded a further grant from the Research Councils in 2006 with  Phase II funding running from 2006 until 2011. Details of the progress made in Phase II can be found in the 2006 - 2010 Progress Report.
