The first Clinical grade human embryonic stem cells offered for
public distribution from the UKSCB
The first Clinical grade human embryonic stem cells
offered for public distribution from the UKSCB have been submitted
to the UK Steering Committee for the UK Stem Cell Bank and for the
Use of Stem Cell Lines by Kings College London.
These cells will now be subjected to careful evaluation to
ensure that they are fit for human application under the
requirements of the UK’s Human Tissues Act and the European Tissues
and Cells Directive. The UK is unique in having a nationally
coordinated activity of groups in Edinburgh, London, Manchester,
Newcastle and Sheffield, to deliver such cells (UK Clinical Stem
Cell Forum) and we anticipate a significant increase
in the number of these cells lodged at UKSCB in order to meet
the needs of future therapies for a broad range of ethnic groups.
